How the tiers are defined
How PSA defines the declared-value tiers, and what each one charges.
PSA classifies every submission by the sum of declared values across all cards in the order, not per-card. A $1,800 batch lands in the same tier as a single $1,800 card, and a five-card batch where everything adds to $1,800 lands in the same tier again. The tier is what determines the insurance and post-grading declared-value fee multipliers, so the batch total, not any single card, drives the math.
The standard PSA bands look like this (declared-value totals across the whole order):
- Tier 1: $0 to $199 total~3% DV fee
- Tier 2: $200 to $499 total~3% DV fee
- Tier 3: $500 to $999 total~3% DV fee
- Tier 4: $1,000 to $2,499 total~3% DV fee
- Tier 5: $2,500 and up~3% DV fee + handling
Percentages stay flat across tiers; what changes tier-to-tier is the minimum per-order insurance handling and the per-card grading fee schedule PSA enforces on that tier. A batch that crosses a tier boundary pays the higher tier's minimum even if it only nudged the total by $1.

The per-card cost is what matters when you compare one strat vs. another in batch optimization: tier drift moves the whole batch together, but the per-card hit is smaller the more cards you have in the order.
Three knobs flip that math on a given batch: the declared values themselves, the order they are grouped into, and the grading service tier you select at checkout. Slabwright's mapper keeps the first two honest row-by-row before the order leaves your browser.
Batch optimization: tier drift
Batch optimization: pushing a batch up or down a tier, and the trade-offs.
The most common optimization mistake is tier drift: a single high-value card pushes the whole batch into the next band and the four cheaper cards behind it all pay the higher minimum. Two strategies fix this:
Split the batch. Pull the Trout off this five-card run and ship it in its own single-card order. The four-card batch stays in Tier 3, the Trout pays Tier 4 alone, and you pay two per-order minimums instead of one inflated tier minimum, but you also pay two per-order handling fees instead of one, so the win only shows on a meaningful spread.
Re-examine the declared values.A $10 mis-key on one card can move the whole batch. Slabwright's running total sits at the bottom of the mapper so you can see the band you are about to land in before you pay, and the error flagging panel catches every missing or malformed declared-value cell before the order ships.
Combine to the next tier deliberately. If you have a Tier 3 batch and one card short of Tier 4, adding a $300 card to the order can actually lower per-card DV cost: the new card's declared value amortizes the tier-4 minimum across more cards. The math only works on small spreads, and only when the new card is one you actually want graded.
